How to alter a sheepskin coat: fashionable and stylish DIY solutions. We transform an old sheepskin coat into a stylish thing!! Remake an old sheepskin coat with your own hands

Every fashionista tries to look stylish and attractive at any time of the year. An outdated winter sheepskin coat is not a reason to be upset, and if you don’t want to wear the same outerwear for another season, there is a simple solution that will allow you to update your wardrobe. At the same time, costs can be minimized, and as a result you can get an almost new item. In this article we will talk about how to alter a sheepskin coat. Fashionable and stylish solutions can transform a thing beyond recognition.

Fresh ideas

It is clear that fashion is a fickle phenomenon. In pursuit of fresh images and new silhouettes, designers and fashion designers resort to various tricks. The location of the pockets, the size of the collar, the number of raised seams, the design of the sleeve cap, the cuff, the length of the product and other elements paint the image of the product, its style and appearance. Proper placement of parts, fasteners, and a correctly constructed pattern that follows the curves of the body are the key to a perfect fit. And even if the second thing didn’t fit the figure very well, it can be improved. But is it possible to alter a sheepskin coat on your own, and most importantly, how? Fashionable and stylish solutions will come in handy. It is worth looking around or leafing through outerwear fashion magazines to determine the most suitable option for yourself.

Rework options

First, you need to look at the model of the sheepskin coat and determine which elements can be updated. This could be new cuffs or hood trim. You can also consider options that involve completely ripping out the item at the seams with subsequent inserts made of natural or leather insulated with padding polyester.

An equally interesting option is to use sheepskin coat material as interior decoration. In this case, you will need to select a fabric for the top. Considering that the sheepskin coat is quite dense, the base should be made of thin material. For this purpose, you can use raincoat fabric or thin leather. In both cases, the result will look original.

At first glance, it may seem that changing the style of outerwear yourself is not the best idea. But if you figure out how to alter a sheepskin coat at home, it turns out that this process is not so complicated. And if you try and make every effort, the result will be quite decent.

Difficulties and overcoming them

The level of difficulty of the work depends on the material of the sheepskin coat. Naturally, to sew genuine leather you will need. Of course, in everyday life such a unit is a rarity. Therefore, to remake such a product, all seams will have to be laid manually. At the same time, they must be in small increments and strong enough not to diverge. But a household sewing machine can handle artificial material quite well, which greatly facilitates the work. Not every craftswoman can alter an old sheepskin coat made of natural material, and it is better to entrust such painstaking work to specially trained craftsmen with the appropriate equipment. But minor alterations, which involve modifying small parts, can be done independently.

Materials and preparatory work

How can you alter a sheepskin coat made of artificial material and what will be needed for this? Firstly, you need sharp scissors or a special knife for cutting fur, number 80, strong threads and materials for creating a new trim, if provided.

To understand what result to strive for, you need to develop a sketch of the product. It should indicate the main seams and decorative elements, including fasteners, trims, pockets, etc.

You should also make a preliminary calculation of the consumption of additional material.

Stages of work

To make a beautiful alteration of a sheepskin coat with your own hands, the whole process should be divided into stages:

Ideas for female models

For several seasons in a row, fashionistas have been shining in original fur vests. Of course, this looks like a very warm product, but considering that girls have to wear the thing over a spring jacket or a warm knitted sweater, one can only assume that such clothes are not particularly warm, especially when the thermometer is creeping down. But if you modify such a thing, you will get a completely cozy fur coat. And here you should consider options for how to alter a sheepskin coat. Fashionable and stylish solutions with fur fronts and back and sleeves made of inverted leather are a great solution!

For such a product, you can either take a piece of artificial fur like a mink or an arctic fox, or use your favorite fur coat, which is quite worn out and even frayed in places. This way you can kill two birds with one stone and have a great item for the winter cold.

Another stylish option is a striped coat made of sheepskin and fur. Here you will need to rip open the sheepskin coat and cut all the parts, evenly removing 10 cm strips, in place of which sew identical pieces of fur.

What do altered sheepskin coats look like before and after? The answer to such a question lies in the professionalism of the master. Of course, such a project cannot be completed by a person who has never operated a sewing machine or cut things on his own, because the basics of sewing and cutting are required for such an alteration. However, you definitely need to dream up the future style of the item before sending it to the workshop.

Ideas for male models

Men are less capricious in their choice of clothes and often wear purchased items, as they say, to the nines. And if a man’s sheepskin coat needs to be altered, it is most likely because it has completely lost its appearance. And there are few options here. It is clear that inserts made of artificial or natural fur are not an option for respectable outerwear of the stronger sex. But still, the appearance of a sheepskin coat can be transformed if you sew a cover for it in the form of a thin windbreaker made of raincoat fabric or denim. In the case of the latter material, you can even achieve the result in the form of a parka that is popular this season. Patch pockets with buttons, a cord inserted into the inner drawstring at the waist and along the bottom, a hood with fur interior trim - and the updated jacket is ready to wear. And so that the top layer does not move, it must be secured in the armholes and neckline.

Thus, you will get a warm jacket with fur inside and a fabric base on the outside, which, even if it gets wet, it will be imperceptible, since the product has its own secret, which outsiders do not need to know about. And to do such a thing, you just need to choose the most acceptable option for how to alter a sheepskin coat.

Fashionable and stylish solutions for children

In the case of children's sheepskin coats, you can also work on them, especially if they are made of natural material. As a rule, a child wears such things for a couple of years, and then grows up, and as if by magic, the sleeves become small, and the sheepskin coat itself looks more like a jacket. But due to the fact that according to the standards used in factories, things are usually sewn quite wide, this fact can be very useful.

If the item is the right width and is only a little short, why not complement it with mink fur? Even if artificial, if you make a frill of fur only 10 cm wide around the cuffs, hem and hood, then the child will be able to show off in a beautiful fur coat for another couple of years. Of course, this option is more acceptable for girls, but for boys you can try the option with a parka jacket.

If an old sheepskin coat has been hanging in your closet for a long time, perhaps inherited from your mother, you should not throw it away. If the product is made of high-quality, natural material, it can be updated by turning it into stylish, fashionable outerwear. Modern fashion designers offer a lot of options that will help turn an inconspicuous, out-of-fashion tanned leather coat into a comfortable sheepskin coat. You just need to read the recommendations of experts and come up with a model that you would like to get as a result. By combining the desired with the possible, every housewife can transform an old sheepskin coat into a stylish one with her own hands.

What can you do

From an out-of-fashion product, you can make the following options:

  • Change the style.
  • Change the fittings.
  • Decorate.
  • Add new details to the model.

Detailed instructions

The simplest but most effective method is to slightly change the style of an outdated product. Firstly, you can change the length of the coat, turning it into a long or short jacket. This is a simple method that even a novice seamstress can handle. Secondly, the previous model probably does not fit the figure perfectly. Correctly placed darts will help correct the situation. You can remake an old sheepskin coat with your own hands using a new collar or hood. If the last element is not provided in the previous product, it can be sewn from a piece of fabric similar in structure and color. If you have altered a long sheepskin coat into a short one in the photo, you can use material cut from the hem to create a hood. In transforming an old product, sewing in a comfortable zipper, which will replace the button closure, will help.

By the way, accessories play a big role in creating a new image of any thing. If the style and length of the old sheepskin coat suits you, new buttons, fasteners and snaps will help to breathe fresh notes into the product. It would seem that small fasteners cannot play a big role. But practice proves the opposite. Often, thanks to new fasteners, an old item is literally transformed, creating a new image - stylish and fashionable.

Creative individuals can use their talent to decorate an outdated sheepskin coat model with their own hands. Use your imagination. Sequins, rhinestones, multi-colored threads, as well as acrylic paints, which can be used to paint an original pattern on a sheepskin coat, are suitable for decorating the product. Patterns on the back of the item, as edging on pockets and cuffs, will help to add drama.

Manual decoration is an excellent, interesting way that allows you to literally transform a boring thing. Considering that leather is a wonderful material that is often used in decorative and applied arts, there are many examples of how to properly and originally decorate an old sheepskin coat model with your own hands. To decorate outerwear, you can use stencils with a pattern and a porous sponge, which is used to apply paint. By the way, decorating a sheepskin coat with painting is a great way to veil stubborn stains.

If the housewife knits, then this skill can be used to remake a sheepskin coat with her own hands. Try knitting new cuffs, sleeves or collar for the old item. By decorating knitted elements with fur, you can easily transform your sheepskin coat at home and without extra expenses.

Global transformation

You can transform the sheepskin coat in the photo into a stylish sheepskin coat. To do this, you need to measure the length of the desired product and cut off the excess. Moreover, the style of a short fur coat can be fitted or loose. In the second case, the updated item can be decorated with an elegant belt. Implement this idea and you will be surprised how the thing has changed before and after processing.

When assessing an old sheepskin coat, you can note that abrasions have appeared on it. A creative approach and decorative inserts made of fur or fabric that match the color and texture of the product will help correct the situation. The combination of tanned leather and suede looks very beautiful. Try to combine these materials, and you will see that transforming an outdated item into a new and stylish wardrobe item is possible.

When changing the length of the coat and complementing the appearance with decorative inserts, it is recommended to pay attention to the lining. Often this element is forgotten, leaving the same material. But it’s worth replacing the old lining with a new one in a bright color, and the coat will sparkle with new colors.

If you want to give your sheepskin coat an updated appearance, use all the possibilities. Look through fashion magazines, choose a model of an original belt that will be wonderfully combined with an updated item. The belt can be combined with a new bag or boots. Surely, this idea will appeal to any fashionista.

A global method of transformation is changing the color of a tanned leather coat. Even if the item has been converted into a jacket or short fur coat, but the result does not meet expectations, you can arm yourself with a can of special paint and repaint the item. Maybe in a new color, the old sheepskin coat will seem more attractive to you.

In conclusion

If it seems that an outdated, out-of-fashion sheepskin coat cannot become an updated, stylish thing, it is recommended to try one of the methods suggested above. Numerous styles of converted sheepskin coats will inspire any needlewoman. Many options transform outerwear so much that the samples before and after the alteration are absolutely different from each other. Therefore, feel free to implement creative ideas by creating stylish, fashionable items from outdated models.

How to alter a fur coat

Today we will talk about how to alter a fur coat. I would like to note right away that women’s fur coats can be made from natural or faux fur. You can distinguish faux fur from natural fur by simply holding a fur coat in your hands - a fur coat made from faux fur is much lighter than a fur coat made from natural fur.

Working with furs is different. So, for work with natural fur, special machines are used - furriers. It is clear that you are unlikely to be able to use such a machine in everyday life. Therefore, you will have to work manually. With faux fur, the situation is a little simpler, because faux fur can be sewn on a household machine.

And now I will try to tell you about how to alter a fur coat in as much detail as possible.

Let's start with the fact that we need to determine whether the product being remade is natural or artificial. There is a very easy way to check this. You need to take a needle and pierce the product through; if the needle passes through the skin with difficulty (sometimes it may not go through at all), then this product is probably natural. And if the needle passes easily without any difficulty, then your fur coat is most likely made of faux fur.

To alter any fur coat, we will need: a blade, machine needles - spade-shaped No. 120 (for working with natural fur) or a regular needle of the same size (for working with artificial fur), a specialized foot with Teflon coating or fluoroplastic (plastic), polyester threads No. 40 (to match the color of the fur coat), for hand robots, threads and needles, pliers (for natural fur) and a thimble.

Let's start with how to alter a fur coat made of natural fur. First you need to rip the fur coat, we rip everything off. That is, we rip along the side seams, along the middle back seam. It may turn out that the entire fur coat is sewn from long, not very wide strips of fur about 15 cm long (they can be of different widths and lengths). That is, we separate the shelves from the back, the sleeves from the armholes, the collar from the back, the lining fromwe rip completely from the inside of the product, we rip the sleeves along the elbow seam, as well as the shoulder seams.

We will need measurements of the size (person) for which the fur coat will be altered.

Let's start taking measurements on the fur coat. We will need a ballpoint pen and a measuring tape. Let's start with the shelf. The shelf is in front of us: 1) Measure the width - set aside half chest circumference, half waist circumference and half hip circumference. 2) Length measurements: - front length to waist, chest height, product length. We take the back: - width of the back, length of the back to the waist, length of the product.

Now let's move on to the sleeve. Length measurements: - set aside the length of the sleeve, the width of the sleeve at the top, the width of the sleeve at the bottom (at the wrist). Now, using the measurements set aside on all the details, carefully from the wrong side of the fur coat, we begin to slowly cut out a smaller size using a blade. Never use scissors on the fur, this will damage it and create bald patches on it.

When we have finished cutting, we begin to assemble the reduced parts. Each detail has its own seam. That is, the side seam of the front to the side seam of the back, the shoulder seam of the front to the shoulder seam of the back. In fur coats made from natural fur, all parts are sewn together using furrier machines. And since such machines are rare in everyday life, the fur coat will have to be sewn by hand.

We collected all the parts in their places (where they were originally), all the seams were sewn, the collar was reduced and also sewn into the neck. We reduce the lining - the width should be the same size as the altered fur coat itself, and the length should be 4 cm longer (to tuck the seam allowance at the bottom).

The lining is sewn in by machine through the bottom. But it’s better to baste it right away and then sew it in to avoid distortions. Well, the lining was sewn in, and the bottom was also sewn in (through the sleeve). The fur coat is ready.

Now let’s discuss the nuances when it comes to altering a faux fur coat. I’ll make you happy right away: working on it will be a little easier. We need: machine needle No. 120, polyester thread No. 40, blade, scissors, hand needles, basting thread, pen and measuring tape.

We begin to alter a faux fur coat by tearing all the parts apart from each other (in the same way as in a natural fur coat). Measurements for reduction were taken in advance.

Let's get to work. We take measurements on the parts in the same way as we did for a natural fur coat. Take the blade and carefully cut along the marks. We cut it out, take scissors and for each part where the machine seam will go, at the distance of the allowance from the cut we cut off the fur along the entire length of the fur coat.

Baste the side seams of the front and back and sew on a machine (allowance - 1-1.5 cm). We move on to the shoulder seams, connecting them (with right sides facing each other). Folded, you can baste. After basting, we sew it on the machine. Shoulder and side seams are sewn. Next, we sew the sleeve along the elbow seam, the sleeve is ready (the other one is similar).

Now we thread the sleeves one by one into the armholes (each into its own) and sew them on a machine. We first sew the reduced collar into the neckline, then sew it in. After sewing, undo all basting stitches.

Well, the fur coat has been altered. All that remains is to reduce the lining and sew it into the fur coat. We sew in the lining in the same way as we did when altering a natural fur coat. Well, that's all, the fur coat is ready.

I’ve already mentioned that I have two sheepskin coats lying around... one is mine, which was dry-cleaned - and high-quality dry-cleaned! - sat down in such a way that it came in handy for the eldest daughter at the time after the birth of her grandson... I’m already silent that a high-quality dry cleaner somehow managed to do something so wrong with the threads, even that I had to sew up the sleeve and side, but that’s not the point... Sheepskin coat with a luxurious large collar, below the knee - and little worn!

My grandson was only two or three years old at that time; I wouldn’t say the sheepskin coat was very light; imagining HOW my daughter would dress him in it, I put the idea aside. And the sheepskin coat lies there, waiting for something. Maybe when other grandchildren are born... maybe they should make fur envelopes for their strollers... In general, MAYBE one way or another...

Now, in the wake of my alterations, I went to the Season and to Osinka - and found a lot of useful information about altering/repairing sheepskin coats.
