Making a chic fur pompom with your own hands

If you want to add an original accessory to your wardrobe, then try making a fur pompom for a hat with your own hands. Modern fashion only welcomes the use of fur accessories.

Materials for work

The process of making a pompom is divided into several important stages, but it all starts with the purchase of a piece of artificial or natural fur.

You will also need for work:

  • soap or pen;
  • round pattern;
  • threads to match the fur;
  • needle;
  • sharp scissors;
  • a piece of ribbon or lace;
  • synthetic winterizer as a filler.

How to prepare the fur for work?

Every girl has an old, no longer needed fur item at home. So, if you decide to make a pompom from your grandmother’s hat or collar, you will have to prepare the material so that the resulting product looks neat and beautiful.

Follow this diagram:

  • Washing. For this, prepare a solution consisting of 1 teaspoon of ammonia, 2-3 tablespoons of salt, 1 spoon of hair shampoo, 2 tablespoons of soda and a liter of warm water. Soak the fur in it and use a small brush to clean it. Then rinse off the remaining solution with plenty of running clean water and let the fur dry naturally.

Important! Be careful to ensure that the fibers are not damaged during cleaning and that the base remains intact.

  • Coloring. If you are not satisfied with the fur color, you can easily change it. Use regular hair dye for this. Prepare the paint of the desired color according to the instructions in the box and apply it to the fur. Perform all manipulations with gloves in order to rub the paint into the fibers as best as possible, and this will also prevent the appearance of unpainted areas. After the specified period of time, wash off the paint.

Important! Never use a hair dryer to dry fur, as it can damage it.

How to make a pompom?

At this stage we will look in detail at how to make a fur pompom for a hat. The master class below will allow you to do all the work efficiently and quickly:

  • Place the fur, base side up, on a flat surface. It is advisable to secure it with pins, for example, on an ironing board.
  • Using a circular pattern, such as a cup or saucer, draw a circle on the surface.
  • Using sharp scissors, carefully cut out the circle, being careful not to damage the fur located underneath. If you are uncomfortable using scissors, use a utility knife.

Important! If you don’t get a perfectly even circle, then you shouldn’t be upset, because this will not affect the appearance of the product in any way.

  • Take a needle and thread, sew large stitches around the base in a circle. Make sure that while working, the thread is always inside the circle, and the front side is not noticeable.

Important! If the thread clings to the fur, try to release it as carefully as possible. At the beginning of work, do not make a knot, because it will still slip through the base.

  • Secure the thread with securing stitches.
  • Determine by eye how much padding polyester you will need to fill the pompom, then tie it with ribbon or lace.
  • Sew the circle to the very end, tighten the thread, thereby forming the future decoration.
  • Place the synthetic padding inside the pompom, leaving the tails of the ribbon outside, tighten the thread to completely close the hole.
  • The remaining ends of the tape will be useful for attaching the product to the hat.

Making your own pompom from yarn

If you liked the idea of how to make a pompom for a fur hat, but didn’t have any suitable material at hand, then use regular threads. You can make decor for a headdress from ordinary yarn; you will also need rectangular or round patterns to complete the work.

In principle, you can make a template yourself.

Important! Remember that you will never get a perfectly even pom pom using any of the more popular methods. it will still have to be leveled and cut with scissors by hand. To get a beautiful velvety product, use only thick, soft threads.

How to make a plain pompom from yarn?

To begin, prepare a piece of thick cardboard, a ruler, sharp scissors, a pen, yarn and an awl. The operating procedure looks like this:

  • Cut out two rectangular templates from cardboard. Please note that the size of the bubo will be the same as the width of the rectangle. Leave a few centimeters to spare.

Important! The length of the patterns does not affect the size of the finished product, but it is better to make it at least 15 cm, so that later it will be convenient to wind the threads.

  • Take a ruler, determine the center of our rectangle, and at this point make a puncture with an awl. Then cut it on the right side to the puncture point.
  • Pierce the rectangle on the left in two places at a distance of a few centimeters from the edge, and use scissors to make cuts.
  • Thread a long thread through a needle, fold it in half, and thread it into the finished template.
  • Wind the thread from the ball onto a cardboard template.
  • Move the wound thread to the right, towards the large cut.
  • Then tighten the yarn as tightly as possible with a thread and a needle.
  • Sew the pompom several times in the center, secure the thread, but do not cut it.
  • Insert scissors between the two templates and carefully cut the threads.
  • Remove the product from the patterns, straighten it properly and trim it with scissors.

Everything is ready! All that remains is to sew the pompom to the hat with a needle and thread.

How to make a multi-colored pompom?

In this case, use threads of several colors that match each other in color and texture. This element can not only decorate a hat, but also make the interior more comfortable.

With the onset of cold weather, any girl thinks about how she will look in the upcoming season. One way to update your usual wardrobe is to decorate it, in this case, with pom-poms made of silky natural fur or cozy soft yarn. Fortunately, making them is not difficult at all.

Preparatory stage

Before creating a pompom, you must first select and prepare the material.

Fur selection

When it comes to wearing, faux and natural fur are not very different from each other, but it’s still worth knowing a few features of each in order to make the right choice.

Features of faux fur:

  • easier to work with compared to natural ones;
  • it is easier to care for and can often even be washed in a washing machine;

Features of natural fur:

  • among natural furs, otter, sable and mink are considered the most durable, and hare fur wears out the fastest;
  • The easiest to work with will be mink and fox furs, they are pliable, have a thin core (the base on which the fur is attached), and the fur is not very long, so it does not interfere with work.

Advice! To check the quality of the fur, be it natural or artificial, run your hand over it, as if combing with your fingers. The more lint remains on your hand after this action, the poorer the quality of the fur you tested.

Washing and drying natural fur

New fur does not need to be washed, but if you decide to use a piece from an old fur coat, for example, then washing is a necessary preparation step.

For this, a special detergent for washing fur or a solution that you can make yourself is suitable. To do this you will need:

  • washing powder - 5 g,
  • ammonia - 5 g,
  • salt - 15 g,
  • soda - 10 g.

Mix all ingredients and dissolve in 1 liter of water at room temperature. Then, using a soft brush, carefully apply the solution to the entire surface of the fur and the inside, massage for 1 minute and rinse thoroughly under running water.

Pay attention! The fur should dry naturally, at room temperature. You cannot dry it with a hairdryer or battery, as it can dry out, and the inner core will “shrink” from the high temperature and the cut will be irrevocably damaged.

Painting

If the old fur needs updating or you are not satisfied with the shade of the new one, you can dye it. This is done using a special dye, which can be found in specialized stores, or with regular hair dye.

Before using paint, test it on a small piece. To avoid surprises if the resulting color is not what you expected

Coloring is carried out in just a few steps:

  1. Treat the flesh with glycerin, petroleum jelly or any other fatty cream so that it does not dry out during the process.
  2. Paint the fur according to the instructions for the chosen paint.
  3. Rinse well under running water and then place in a warm vinegar solution (use 1 tablespoon of vinegar per 1 liter of water) to consolidate the result.
  4. Now re-treat the fur with the cream that you used in the first stage, and then pin the fur with buttons to any hard surface and let it dry. This way it will not shrink during the drying process.

To make the fur softer and more moisturized, between the dyeing stage and vinegar rinsing, you can treat it with any hair balm.

How to make a fur pompom for a hat with your own hands

We will need:

  • fabric chalk or soap,
  • stationery knife,
  • strong threads in the color of the flesh,
  • needle corresponding to the thickness of the mesdra (from 40 to 120),
  • thin lace or ribbon in the color of fur,
  • filler (even regular padding polyester or pieces of materials will do).

Stages of work:

  1. Draw a circle on the back side of the mesh using a stencil or compass.
  2. Cut carefully to avoid trimming the fur.
  3. Sew along the edge of the circle using small stitches. When finished, do not break the thread.
  4. Take some filler and place it in the center of the circle, tighten the thread, fasten and cut.
  5. Add filler if necessary.

Sew the finished pompom where necessary. If you want it to be removable, sew one half of the rivet to it, and the other half to the product on which the pompom will be attached.

The larger the pompom, the larger the rivet it needs.

Caring for fur pompoms

Fur pom-poms do not require complex care, except for infrequent washing, for example, with one-time stains or at the end of the season, they require washing with a solution, which was described in detail above, or with a special product.

Advice! If the fur on the pompom has become wrinkled as a result of storage, simply spray it lightly with a spray bottle, comb it with a wide-toothed brush and dry it by hanging it upside down. When the pompom is completely dry, comb it again and it will take its proper form.

Yarn pompoms are very easy to make, we will look at several ways to create them.

Pay attention! The size of the pompom depends on the distance of the thread from the core to the edge, and its volume depends on the number of circles wound.

Method No. 1

The simplest option.

Method No. 2

Making a pompom using cardboard rings.

A pom-pom made using this method turns out to be the most even and neat.

This way you can make a perfectly even pompom.

This is interesting! There are even special devices for making pom-poms from threads; they are similar to the devices that we made in this MK.

Method No. 3

This method is perfect for making small pompoms.

  1. Take a regular fork in your hands and wind the thread several turns between the 2nd and 3rd teeth to secure it.
  2. Next, wind the required amount of thread around all the teeth of the fork.
  3. Thread the thread between the 2nd and 3rd cloves and tie the main winding in the middle.
  4. Remove the threads from the fork. Cut loops of thread on each side.
  5. Fluff the pompom.

Method No. 4

A very simple way to make a lot of small pompoms at once.

  1. Take any stool and turn it upside down.
  2. Wind the required amount of thread around the legs.
  3. Cut a lot of threads of 7–10 cm.
  4. Take one short thread at a time and tie each one on the wound threads, at a distance from each other equal to the size of the desired pompoms.
  5. Cut the wound threads exactly in the middle of each segment.
  6. Label each pompom.

Advice! If you need a lot of pompoms at once, you can put 2, 3 or even 4 stools together and wrap threads around the corner legs. This way, the length of the winding will increase significantly, and, accordingly, the number of finished pom-poms.

Idea! In all examples of the use of fur pompoms, the latter can be replaced with yarn pompoms.

We hope our article helped you successfully cope with all stages.

If you liked the idea of how to make a pompom for a fur hat, but didn’t have any suitable material at hand, then use regular threads. You can make decor for a headdress from ordinary yarn; you will also need rectangular or round patterns to complete the work. By applying the pattern from the wrong side to the fur, you can easily cut out the required number of blanks of the required size. This will allow you not to pull out the thread when tightening, since an ordinary knot on the thread without fastening will simply slip through the place where the needle was pierced. Be sure to secure the threads. The thread should pass inside the fur so that the stitches are not visible. Using the first stitches, secure the thread to the base of the fur skin without a knot (double stitch with tightening).

Children's hats with a fur pompom will delight your little ones. If you have a lot of faux fur, then trim the hem of a blouse, a handbag, or even make a scarf. In general, to make children's hats with a fur pompom, take fur or fur trimmings, a needle, strong thread, a special filler in the form of synthetic padding, cotton wool, cardboard and scissors. Initially, a pattern for the pompom is made (although some needlewomen can do it perfectly well without it). To do this, a circle of the required diameter is cut out of cardboard using scissors. The larger you want to make the pompom, the larger the blank. A pompom is a voluminous fur ball (sometimes an oval or a bell), made either of thread or fur (both natural and artificial). Bright and airy, fur pom pom toys are great as a warm and cozy personalized gift.

Remove the pompom blank from the needle gradually, but do not pull the needle straight away; you should get some kind of curls. Make sure that it does not peek out from behind the pompom, but at the same time holds it well (even in windy weather). On the fifth round, I was already cutting the fabric with a minimal amount of lint on my clothes. You can use a blade or a special sharp knife to cut the flesh. Of course, this is a little longer and more difficult than using scissors, but the latter often damage the pile, as a result of which the finished product looks extremely untidy.

Fur pompoms are a great way to decorate even the most boring item. Making pom-poms from fur is very simple, be it artificial or natural. See for yourself - to sew a fur pompom, you just need to be able to hold scissors and a needle in your hands. Then tighten the padding polyester with fur and carefully sew up this structure, you get quite cute and fluffy pompoms that can be used to decorate a hat, shawl or winter jacket. When the pompom is ready, attach it to the elastic band. Next, let's talk about how to attach it to the headdress. Pull the braid to the wrong side of the cap and secure it there with a knot or sew it on. With their help, you will later attach the pompom to the hat. By the way, use the same thread that was used to secure the pompom.

When sewing a self-made pom-pom onto a hat or beret, make sure to do it in at least 4 points, especially if the decoration is large. And if you get a very large hole, go over it with a needle with a thread threaded into it, creating a cross pattern: this kind of barrier will prevent the filler from falling out. It withstands washing remarkably well, unlike cotton wool (it quickly clumps into a lump) or foam rubber (this can generally get damaged quickly). But also take into account the length of the pile itself. And yet, it is still better to do this procedure in a laundry bag. To make pom-poms with this kind of filling, you need to carefully and thoroughly wet the inside using a sponge (or cotton wool) soaked in warm water. After the shred is ready for use, it can be dyed, if necessary: craftswomen recommend using regular ammonia hair dye. Or start cutting right away.

In order to make a pom-pom from fur, you need to choose the fur you like, cut out a circle of the required diameter from it, you need to do this using a stationery knife, then the fur will not be damaged. Cut the fur with a stationery knife or razor on the reverse side so as not to spoil the hairs. Place a lump of padding polyester in the middle. Now you need to carefully tighten the edges of the skin by pulling the thread. If necessary, add more padding polyester. We tie the ends of the threads, with the same thread you can sew a pompom to the product. When performing this manipulation, make sure that the filler remains in the middle of the product, and the ends of the braid are on the outside. Make the next puncture from the wrong side.

I made the pom-poms in a size that allowed me to use the size of the material. And I decided to make one pom-pom larger, so using the principle of selecting scraps, I sewed two strips of fur together using a furrier’s stitch to make a larger square. To do this, you need to take a small piece of fur and put a little padding polyester inside it. Tie with a cord or ribbon, as shown in the photo. Leave long ends to later attach the pompom to the product. Fold it in half with the fur inside and insert the lace.

The current fashion season offers fur hats with pompoms. They are not cheap. The best way out is make your own pompom. By the way, thereby reducing the cost of the product to the maximum.

Tools and materials

Working with fur is quite difficult, but if you decide that you can handle the task, you need to stock up on special tools. To work you will need:

  • furrier's knife;
  • hand fur needles, threads;
  • thimble;
  • round pattern;
  • soap or chalk;
  • padding polyester

A furrier's knife is used to cut the skin. It’s quite difficult to do it yourself without experience and special skills. Professionals never use scissors! They cut only along the flesh, You cannot work on the fur side.

Important: Trimming should be done with extreme care to ensure that as little hair is trimmed as possible. The fewer hairs are trimmed, the more invisible the seam will be.

When working with fur, special needles with a triangular point are used. A regular needle may not be able to pierce thick leather fabric. You need to select a needle and thread in accordance with its thickness. When working with arctic fox or fox skins, use threads No. 80, for thin ones, for example, rabbit - No. 50, 60, for others - No. 40, 50. Threads are selected taking into account the color of the leather fabric.

To protect your fingers from pricks, use a thimble.

Use cardboard to make patterns. It is best to make the template round, this will make it easier to assemble the cut piece into a ball.

A thin piece of soap or chalk is needed to apply the outline of the template to the surface of the sandpaper.

The padding polyester will act as a soft filler for the pompom. If it is not there, you can use cotton wool or pieces of fabric.

Fur selection

Different skins have their own margin of safety. Otter fur is considered the most durable, followed by sable and mink. Rabbit fur wears out the fastest. But since the pompom does not constantly come into contact with surfaces, this characteristic is not of great importance.

The main thing you need to pay attention to is that the fur does not come out with every touch. This indicates its low quality.

If you are not a very experienced needlewoman, it is better to take soft fur (mink, fox). It will easily come together into a ball. And a dense one, for example a mouton, does not fit well and bulges. To give such a pompom a round shape, you must first make several darts on the pattern from the edge to the center. And only then pull it into a ball.

Fur dyeing

If you decide to use leather that is no longer new to make a pompom, it is likely that it will need to be painted.

Note: Before you start painting, the fur must be cleaned of dirt. Otherwise, the paint will not be absorbed well and streaks will appear on the skin.

To prepare a washing solution, take the following for 1 liter of water:

  • washing powder - 5 g;
  • ammonia - 5 g;
  • salt - 15 g;
  • soda - 10 g.

The resulting solution is applied to the entire surface with a brush, and then washed off under running warm water.

With its structure, natural fur resembles human hair, so it is quite suitable for dyeing regular hair dye. Before starting work, try the paint on a small piece. This way you can make sure that you get the desired shade.

After dyeing, the fur is thoroughly washed and, to consolidate the result, placed in a warm vinegar solution for several minutes. It is not recommended to use a fan or hair dryer to dry the skin.

For painting, it is better to take dyes of a darker shade than the base color. Otherwise, you may get unexpected results. For example, when dyed blond, mink becomes yellow.

Sewing instructions

After everything is ready to go, we move on to the master class on making a pompom.

Main stages:

  • making a template;
  • cut;
  • sewing;
  • pompom filling;
  • fastening on the cap.

Draw a pattern on cardboard. When making it, keep in mind that the initial diameter should be 3-4 cm larger than the diameter of the finished product. Place the cut out pattern on a piece of fur and trace it with soap or chalk.

When cutting, the size of the fur is important. If it is a large collar, it is easy to cut out a circle of the desired diameter and start sewing. There will be no problems with how to make a pompom from a fur collar.

When using a narrow edge or fur strip, they need to be cut into several parts and sewn into a single fabric using a furrier's stitch. Then you can start cutting.

Before cutting begins, it is very important to determine pile direction. With long pile this does not cause difficulties. Swipe your hand briefly. If the pile lies in the right direction, it will look smooth.

Having cut out the part, go along its contour with a thick thread using a seam “over the edge”. The thread should be of such a size that you can leave a small part of it at the beginning, and the same part when returning to the starting point.

By pulling the ends of the threads, you will begin to pull the fur into a ball. In order for the filler to acquire the required density, knock it down in your hands and fill the future pompom with it. Pull the edges together as much as possible to prevent the filling from falling out during wear. Secure the ends of the thread with a double knot.

You can sew a pompom to the hat. To ensure it holds well, secure it in at least 4 points.
